About our trust

Ngati Tarāwhai Iwi Trust is a post Treaty settlement entity established to receive, manage and administer the assets and any income received from the Crown in settlement of our Treaty of Waitangi Claims.

NGATI TARĀWHAI IWI TRUST has its purposes identified in the Deed of Trust relating to Ngati Tarawhai Iwi Trust (Oct 2007 and subsequently updated by A deed of consolidation and restatement dated 16 Nov 2020). In summary, they are:

  • The promotion and improvement of hauora for all Uri, which includes the spiritual, mental, emotional, cultural, social, and physical wellbeing of each Uri;

  • The advancement of educaton and vocational training for all Uri;

  • the promotion and advancement of social and economic conditions of all Uri through the relief of economic hardship and deprivation; and…

  • To promote, provide for, assist in such other purposes beneficial to the Uri as the Representatives may decide from time to time.

 

Incidental purposes are:

  • To receive all benefits, moneys or property due, payable or transferable to the Ngati Tarawhai Iwi as an affiliate Iwi member of Te Pumautanga o Te Arawa Trust;

  • To hold the Trust fund and administer the Trust Fund and the liabilities of the trust as trustee on behalf of the Uri;

  • To own, provide, or maintain, any facility, property or corporate entity to meet or satisfy any or all of the Objects of the Trust;

  • Manage prudently the affairs, activities, assets and liabilities of the Trust;

  • To support and assist, financially or otherwise, the Uri in accordance with the Objects of the Trust as the Representatives may decide from time to time; and…

  • To generally do all such acts, matters and things to enter into and make such arrangements as are incidental to or conducive to the attainment of one or more of the objects of the trust

  • For assets to undertake Community Development Activities; administer and use community development assets for the benefit of Ngati Tarawhai and to further the purposes of the Trust.

E ai ki taku kuia, he toto rau matou nō Te Arawa, nō Tainui nō Mataatua waka. He tuhanga mātou nā te whānau Ehau, nā te whānau Pango hoki. Ko Ngāti Te Rangitakaroro, ko Ngāti Te Iwimokai, ko Ngāti Rongoheikume ngā hapu.

Kia ora, I'm a papa of six, koro of 5. Born and bred in Te Koutu (Rotorua). After leaving uni I started in accounting then moved into the education sector. I have over 30 years’ experience working in the education and commercial sector. I work alongside my sister providing professional development training, as well as being a consultant working with private sector and government organisations. This is my 6th year with the Trust.

Maureen Malcolm
Trustee

Maureen is passionate about giving back to her iwi. She is currently a lecturer of Law at the university of Auckland and splits her time between Auckland and Rotorua.

Maureen is excited for the future of Ngāti Tarāwhai and looks forward to supporting the development of the aspirations of both the trust and uri of Tarāwhai.

I currently hold the position of Chairman of the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) and a Board member on Toi Ohomai. My aspiration is a strong Ngati Tarawhai with the well-being of whanau at the heart of what we do.

 

Ruakiri T T H Fairhall

Ngāti Tarāwhai, Te Arawa, Te Whakatōhea
Trustee

Born in Tauranga, Ruakiri is a product of Māori-Medium and Global education, who is driven to help and support everyone realise their full potential. Over the last 10 years, Ruakiri has worked in various roles across the public sector for various government agencies and is currently the lead Cultural Advisor - Kaiwhakamānawa at Toi Moana - Bay of Plenty Regional Council.  He is also the business owner of Te Haeata Consultancy Ltd, a company developed to support groups, organisations, corporations and companies grow their understanding and appreciation of te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Ruakiri has long been serving Ngāti Tarāwhai as the co-founder and head tutor of Te Kapa o Ngāti Tarāwhai alongside his whānau since September 2009. The kapa was created to bring together descendants of Ngāti Tarāwhai from all 3 marae and over the last 12 years the kapa has  seen over 160 performers and has performed at over 50 events across Aotearoa and 10 countries overseas. The Kapa now consists of a Pakeke group.

While he serves the Ngāti Tarāwhai board as a new trustee, he also sits as a member of Te Mātāuru ki Te Arawa (Te Mātāwai), Ngā Kohinga Whakairo o Hinemihi and the Aotearoa NZ United World College Committee.

Tāmara Simpkins
Trustee

Tāmara has taught in rūmaki education in the primary school sector for 20 years. She is a new trustee to the Ngāti Tarāwhai Iwi Trust and aspires to contribute to the trust’s vision to support education, health, and well-being of the people of Ngāti Tarāwhai.

Angela Wharekura
Project Manager

Angela has worked in the Trustee Industry for over 30 years specialising in the area of Maori land governance and administration. She has a wide range of skills and knowledge in Farming, Forestry and Horticulture, Geothermal and commercial assets, subdivision and looking at best land use options for Maori Land.

She is a Member of the Executor and Trustee Institute (METI) and holds a National Certificate in Financial Services (Financial Advice).
